Beaufort, SC, Excessive Heat Alert Issued as Temperatures Push Toward Mid 90s

Posted on July 23, 2026July 23, 2026 by BeaufortLionsClub Staff

Beaufort, South Carolina, is bracing for another stretch of dangerous heat this week, with the National Weather Service warning that conditions could turn severe for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Current readings show temperatures near 28°C (about 82°F) with humidity sitting at a sticky 84 percent, and forecasters say daytime highs will climb into the mid 90s over the coming days, with heat index values expected to feel closer to 106 to 107 degrees.

The excessive heat alert, issued for the Beaufort area, warns that severe heat is expected across the region. Local weekly forecasts show a string of hot afternoons ahead, with highs projected in the low to mid 90s each day and only modest overnight relief, as lows are expected to hover in the mid 70s.

Winds are forecast to stay light, generally around 13 kilometers per hour, which will do little to cut through the heavy, humid air pressing in from the coast.

Why the Heat Index Matters More Than the Thermometer

Meteorologists point out that the actual air temperature only tells part of the story. When humidity levels climb as high as they have this week, the body has a harder time cooling itself through sweat evaporation, which pushes the “feels like” temperature well above the reading on a thermometer.

That gap is exactly what health officials in the Lowcountry have been highlighting throughout the summer, as repeated rounds of heat advisories and excessive heat warnings have pushed heat index values past 110 degrees on multiple occasions in recent weeks.

Officials in Beaufort County have already leaned on this messaging earlier in the season, opening cooling centers at libraries and recreation facilities when heat index values threatened to break records. While no new cooling center announcement has come with this latest alert, residents are being urged to treat the coming days with the same caution.

Staying Safe as the Heat Lingers

Health officials recommend a few basic precautions for anyone who has to be outside during the hottest parts of the day. Drinking water regularly, even before feeling thirsty, remains one of the simplest ways to avoid heat related illness. Taking breaks in shade or air conditioning, wearing lightweight and light colored clothing, and avoiding strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours can also lower the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Pet owners and those caring for elderly relatives or young children are urged to pay extra attention, since these groups tend to be more vulnerable to sudden temperature spikes. Checking on neighbors, especially those without reliable air conditioning, is also encouraged during stretches like this one.

With little rain in the forecast and humidity expected to stay high, forecasters say the heat is unlikely to break anytime soon, making the next several days a stretch worth taking seriously.
